If you’ve been on my website for any length of time, you already know I specialize in wilderness leadership coaching. After all, the greatest leaders are formed in the Wild. But you may have also seen that I’m a “Master Certified Coach.”
What the heck does that mean?
Well, it’s a title and a certification…
And while that’s less exciting than climbing volcanoes, it’s very important that you know what it means. Because it makes a BIG difference.
Whether you choose me as your coach or not, you should always look for that MCC (Master Certified Coach).
What Is A Master Certified Coach? And Why Should You Care?
If someone claims to be a Master Certified Coach, it means that they’ve received official certification from the International Coaching Federation (ICF).
The ICF is considered the gold standard of coaching credentials and is basically “the hub of all things coaching.”
The MCC provided by the ICF is their highest recognition of coaching ability. Obtaining an MCC is no small task.
Lesser certifications include the ACC and the PCC which are stepping stones to the MCC.
If you’re familiar with sports, the ACC is like high school, the PCC is like college and the MCC is the major league.
Now, is there that big of a difference between these various certifications?
Short answer: YES, there’s a world of difference. And if you have the chance, always go with a Master Certified Coach.
I won’t go in-depth into all of the nitty-gritty details.
But here are a few things you may find interesting.
- To earn an MCC, you have to first earn a PCC.
- To become a Master Certified Coach, you must document at least 2,500 hours of professional coaching experience, which is more than four times the hours required for the ACC and PCC combined. Over my coaching career, I’ve documented well over 11,000 coaching hours, more than enough to get the MCC four separate times.
- The ICF requires over 200 hours of coach-specific education before awarding an MCC.
- An additional 10 hours of specifically Mentor Coaching is required, on top of the Mentor Coaching you submitted for any previous coaching credentials.
There’s a lot more I could say about this, but I’m afraid I’d bore you to tears.
It suffices to say that the divide between a Master Certified Coach and any other coaching certification is pretty vast.
Because the MCC recognizes extensive paid experience, and there is no adequate replacement for that.
So what’s my point in all this?
If You Need Coaching, Always Choose A Master Certified Coach
I’m not saying this just because I’m a Master Certified Coach, although, I guess it does help my case.
Because seriously, I wish everyone could get this level of coaching, but they’re just aren’t enough coaches to do it. In fact, there are less than 1,400 Master Coaches worldwide!
And I certainly can’t take on everybody who needs a Master Certified Coach, but I will do the best I can to help change as many lives as possible.
But… I am pretty strict about who I help.
You need to be willing to help yourself.
You need to want to get out of your comfort zone and conquer your weaknesses.
You need to have the will and the means to break away from your day-to-day routine, throw yourself into the great unknown and look deeply into your mind and heart.
You have to be willing to put in the work to discover your true self, unlock your potential and achieve your dreams.
